The Wearable Arts Shows

It was especially exciting being able to parade our gorgeous korowai cloaks on stage this Tuesday and Wednesday in the Wearable Arts show. The hall was packed with parents, invited guests and the Year 5 and 6 students. Our class moved in time to the catchy Maori tune called Wairua and they twirled and strutted up and down the catwalk. Even though it was a little daunting going up to perform the children looked very confident and made us so proud!

Wearable Arts - Our Korowai Cloaks

It has taken lots and lots of work to decorate over a hundred feather shapes, mostly made from recycled materials. These had been painstakingly cut out and painted, mainly by Mrs Kneale and Mrs Umrigar, and have been glued to the black cloaks that these wonderful parents have sewn. Now we are all ready to proudly show our colourful korowai in the Wearable Arts Show.

Swimming Lessons at Lagoon Pools in Panmure

How wonderful to have enjoyed eight consecutive swimming lessons at the pools in Panmure. Competent swimming teachers worked hard at developing the children's skills over these days and the children certainly responded so well. It was a joy to observe how much more confident our beginner swimmers were at the end and to note just how well our swimmers had done over these days. Many, many thanks to the wonderful parents who came along to help - many of whom arrived to support the children every day!

Rippa Tag Finals Tournament

What an exciting tournament it was - the whole school had assembled on the field to participate in the Ripper Tag finals. Only those teams that had made it to the first four needed to play for the final three positions. Room Five were team China and they were to play Team Vietnam (Room 10) for a third place slot. By a close margin, we were the victors - hooray!! We then cheered for our Room 6 buddies (Team Zimbabwe) who came second against Team Jamaica (Room 3).

How well all the children played - they have really developed their skills over the term!

Happy Father's Day

We enjoyed writing stories about our special dads and making cards to treat them and to show how much we appreciated them. Our dads are sure to have savoured the chocolates that our wonderful Mrs Kneale moulded and they may also have had lots of fun playing the memory game the children made for them.

Here is a story Mason wrote about Father's Day - Yesterday was Fathers Day.  l woke up and l waited until my dad was awake  l gave my present to him and he loved it! He gave me a big smile and a hug. I gave him an owl card and inside it was a game and a personal letter with a handmade chocolate. He had a rest on the couch and watched a movie on the tv, then he had a game of hide and seek with me and my brother. It was funny because my brother kept winning. We played Mario Kart on the Wii U and it was really fun. I am glad my dad had a lovely day because he is the best dad in the world.

The Getwise Money Programme

The Getwise Money programme is sponsored by ASB and is intended to teach children basic skills with regard to developing monetary awareness and sense.
They have an excellent website to guide parents in giving their children opportunities to learn, earn and work wisely with money - https://www.asb.co.nz/banking-with-asb/financial-literacy-get-wise-parent-resources-5-6-years.html

We  Get Wise With Marlon  by Ceeza

This morning Marlon came to our classroom and showed us how to save money and cash.   He taught us how to save and spend and share.  Next he dressed up as a Superhero and he showed us how to fly. He told us a story about Larry and his voice was funny. I laughed at him and then he told us to fly around and sing “I believe I can fly”. It was fun to listen to him because he acted silly and crazy!

Maths Week

What a great week of learning we had from Monday to Thursday this week. Our maths programme took a different shape as we enjoyed rotating between the Year two classes and experiencing some digital maths and some very practical maths games. On Monday we used Ipads to work on an app called Osmo and we used letter and number tiles to build words and then numbers.

Our learning in Room 6 was with Sphero balls that can be programmed like robots to move in every direction!

Room 3's learning experience was to learn some coding using Coding Awbie and this was a great challenge too!

Room 4 had a variety of maths board games and puzzles which the children thoroughly enjoyed.

What a wonderful week to use the mathematical knowledge the children already have to learn a range of new skills.
