Learning from Home Week 5

Once again schools were closed this week and we needed to stay at home because the coronavirus has returned to Auckland. We all got straight back into it and have been busy learning at home once again.

Here are some photos we shared from our homes this week -

Ava and Daniel Read a Story

Thanks so much to Ava and Daniel for choosing such lovely stories to read to us today. Ava's story from home was about a caterpillar who thought he was insignificant. We enjoyed finding out about the plain, ordinary caterpillar who discovered he was so much more than that! Daniel read about the wonderful elves who came to the rescue of a poor shoemaker and his wife.

Assembly - Our Sun and Moon Art Work

We were excited to show the art we had done in assembly today. We had designed a sun and moon that interlinked to show day and night. Using warm colours like red, orange and yellow, we coloured the sun and its flames. For the moon we used cool colours like blue, green and purple. We added some kuru patterns to the moon for effect and then we dyed the background black to look like they were in space.

Sienna and Austin introduced our item in assembly and we all carefully held up our colourful, bright pieces of art. It was good to see some of our parents came to watch us in assembly!

Our Cultural Week

This has been a wonderful week of sharing and learning about the various cultures that we hold dear in our class. We have children who affiliate themselves with both their Kiwi culture and their other heritage such as Chinese, Maori, Malaysian, Brazilian, Cornish, Cook Islanders, South African and Cambodian. Some children brought items of interest from their cultures and these were fascinating!

Each day during lunch time there were wonderful opportunities to try out activities on a cultural theme such as gumboot throwing, stories in Dutch, origami, henna painting, Maori kohaiwhai patterns, Chinese lanterns, watching a lion dance and other performances, etc.

Then on Friday we all celebrated by wearing traditional costumes and viewing many amazing items in the Cultural Assembly. A memorable week was enjoyed by all!
