Our class planted some swan plants that had been donated by Kings Plant Barn. Many thanks to Lydia and Peenaz, Grace and Zoe's mums, for coming along to dig the holes so that we could pop the plants in. Hopefully next year there will be many monarch caterpillars and butterflies resident in that corner of the Hive.
Yay! The grand finale of Book Week! We have had some interesting activities relating to books this week - guess the teacher's favourite book, storytime with Miss Kluit and word searches. Today we arrived at school in character - a book character. We all looked amazing and had gone to lots of trouble with our costumes. Many thanks to all the parents who helped to get the children ready!
We were looking forward to meeting June Pitman-Hayes because she has written a book that we have already read together. It is a story in song and we have learned to sing the song with Mrs Clark as well. It is lovely! June told us that books are like magic and she read us her story and then she sang the song as well. We sang along with her - lots of fun! She said she had a "frog in her throat" because she had been talking too much and her voice sounded different.
We were very fortunate to have an art class with Stu Duval in the hall today. He showed us how to draw cartoons using simple shapes, letters and numbers. We had pencils and paper and we followed his instructions, step-by-step. We were very proud of the drawings we had done. For more great drawing ideas look up this website - studuval.co.nz.
It is great being back at school all ready for Term 2! This first week is a celebration of books and we thoroughly enjoyed Stu Duval, an author and illustrator who has become a firm favourite visitor to our school. Stu writes books and he loves to draw, especially cartoons. He told us about a new book that he has written called 'The Legend of Captain Black Custard'. It is about a pirate called Captain Black Custard who hated treasure. He had a pirate ship called the Apple Tart. He didn't have swords, he had spoons and he searched the world with his crew, searching for puddings and recipes. They landed in a bay with huge kauri trees and they had to find a hollow tree where Lamington Lil lived. She made lamingtons and Captain Black Custard wanted to taste her cooking and get her recipe for lamingtons. It is a delightful story! We were engrossed and amused by the wonderful way Stu manages to draw and tell the story at the same time!
