Our Trip to the Museum

At last!! We have been waiting for this day to arrive and what a wonderful and interesting time it was. We enjoyed travelling there by bus along with our parent helpers. As soon as we arrived, we were greeted by Gilbert, our museum guide. He took us down to the Maori section where we visted the Wharenui that had been built 143 years ago. The head of the wharenui is of Hotunui the chief from those days. Gilbert helped us learn the names of the parts of the wharenui by singing a song and playing a game. Then we entered the beautiful meeting house quietly and bare footed. We admired the inside body parts (the spine, ribs and heart). We also looked at the various carvings of different ancestors and then looked closely at the patterns that were woven on the walls.

Then we tried to find the Taniwha that was on one of the panels and finally we learned how to do some weaving in pairs. It was tricky at first but soon we got the idea.  The rest of the Maori area was very interesting to see, particularly the massive waka!

We spent the rest of the day exploring various parts of the museum and really enjoyed seeing so many amazing objects and doing lots of different activities.
