We were very fortunate to have an art class with Stu Duval in the hall today. He showed us how to draw cartoons using simple shapes, letters and numbers. We had pencils and paper and we followed his instructions, step-by-step. We were very proud of the drawings we had done. For more great drawing ideas look up this website - studuval.co.nz.

Term 2 Book Week - Stu Duval
It is great being back at school all ready for Term 2! This first week is a celebration of books and we thoroughly enjoyed Stu Duval, an author and illustrator who has become a firm favourite visitor to our school. Stu writes books and he loves to draw, especially cartoons. He told us about a new book that he has written called 'The Legend of Captain Black Custard'. It is about a pirate called Captain Black Custard who hated treasure. He had a pirate ship called the Apple Tart. He didn't have swords, he had spoons and he searched the world with his crew, searching for puddings and recipes. They landed in a bay with huge kauri trees and they had to find a hollow tree where Lamington Lil lived. She made lamingtons and Captain Black Custard wanted to taste her cooking and get her recipe for lamingtons. It is a delightful story! We were engrossed and amused by the wonderful way Stu manages to draw and tell the story at the same time!

Sharing Our Learning with Room 6
We enjoyed getting together with Room 6 to share our Inquiry Learning with them and finding out about theirs. We have been discovering more about fish and used books and the internet to find information as to how they live. Then we presented our findings in a slideshow and we recorded ourselves reading our report.
Room 6 taught us many interesting facts about bees in their presentation and we listened intently as they told us what they had researched.

Our STEM Day Adventure
What a wonderful day of discovery we had as we worked with Mr Rankin on various STEM challenges today. In pairs, we followed instructions to build a Mr Learny man out of Lego. After that we went on to design and make a car that would clock up the fastest speed out of Lego blocks. We placed our racing car on a special ramp that recorded the speed and then we worked together to modify the car so that it became faster and faster.
Thanks ever so much to the wonderful parents who came in to support us. We really appreciated the help given by Grace's mum, Kayla and Bella's dad, Nicole's mum and Yiran's mum. We feel so fortunate having them there to give us a hand with sorting and packing the blocks - many thanks indeed!

Our Buddy Class - Card Making
Our Buddy Class were out running this week and sadly, they noticed a sign in memoriam of a cousin who had been killed in Christchurch during the tragic shooting. We decided that as a way of extending our heartfelt condolences to this neighbouring family, we would write messages on a heart and make it into a card for them.
